  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.  Risk of fire and explosion on contact with acids or oxidants.  NO contact with acids or strong oxidizing agents.  NO contact with incompatible materials: See Chemical Dangers  In case of fire in the surroundings, use appropriate extinguishing media.

 PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Shortness of breath. Wheezing.  Use ventilation.  Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness.  Protective gloves.  Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
Eyes Redness. Burning sensation. Pain.  Wear safety goggles.  Rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.  Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention .

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Personal protection: filter respirator for acid gases and vapours adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in covered non-metallic containers as far as possible. Absorb liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Wash away remainder with plenty of water. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
WHITE POWDER WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

Physical dangers

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on heating and on contact with acids. This produces sulfur oxides. The substance is a strong reducing agent. It reacts violently with oxidants. This generates fire hazard. Reacts violently with concentrated solution of sodium nitrite.

Formula: Na2O5S2/Na2S2O5
Molecular mass: 190.1
Decomposes at 150°C
Density: 2.36 g/cm³
Solubility in water, g/100ml at 20°C: 65 (good)
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: -3.7

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is severely irritating to the eyes. The substance is irritating to the skin, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. Exposure could cause asthma-like reactions or urticaria in sensitive persons.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly , especially if powdered.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged inhalation may cause asthma-like symptoms. The substance may have effects on the skin.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: 5 mg/m3, as TWA; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen)

ENVIRONMENT
The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms.

NOTES
Rinse contaminated clothing with plenty of water because of fire hazard.
Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact.
The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Due to lack of specific data on this substance, the information included in this card was derived by analogy with sodium bisulfite.
