EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is corrosive to the eyes. The substance is irritating to the skin and upper respiratory tract.

Inhalation risk
A harmful concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
MAK: 2 mg/m3; peak limitation category: I(2); pregnancy risk group: C

ENVIRONMENT
See Notes.

NOTES
CAS numbers for optical isomers are 87-69-4 for L-tartaric acid, 147-71-7 for D-tartaric acid and 147-73-9 for meso tartaric acid. L-tartaric acid is also known as E334.
Environmental effects of the racemic DL-mixture have not been adequately investigated. The L-isomer has been adequately investigated, but no significant effects have been found.
