  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Not combustible but forms flammable gas on contact with water or damp air. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.  Risk of fire and explosion on contact with water or damp air.  NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking. NO contact with water.    Use carbon dioxide, dry sand. NO water.

PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Cough. Dizziness. Lethargy. Headache. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Sore throat.  Use local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin   Protective gloves.  Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
Eyes Redness. Pain.  Wear safety goggles.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Convulsions. Diarrhoea. Unconsciousness. Vomiting. Further see Inhalation.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.  Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Rest. Refer for medical attention .

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Personal protection: gas-tight chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Sweep spilled substance into covered sealable containers. Carefully collect remainder. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

MAGNESIUM PHOSPHIDE ICSC: 0744
PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
YELLOW-TO-GREEN CRYSTALS.

Physical dangers
No data.

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on heating. This produces toxic fumes including phosphorus oxides and phosphine. This increases fire hazard. Reacts with water and moisture in the air. Reacts violently with acids. This produces phosphine. This generates fire and toxic hazard.

Formula: Mg3P2 / Mg=P-Mg-P=Mg

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of dust and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. See Notes.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS

ENVIRONMENT
Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use.

NOTES
Reacts violently with fire extinguishing agents such as water.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
See ICSC 0694.
