  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.  Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting.      In case of fire in the surroundings, use appropriate extinguishing media.

 PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Sore throat.  Use ventilation.  Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Pain.  Protective gloves.  First rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention .
Eyes Redness. Pain.  Wear safety spectacles.  Rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Burning sensation. Sore throat. Cough. Abdominal pain. Vomiting. Diarrhoea.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.  Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Refer immediately for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Personal protection: filter respirator for inorganic gases and vapours adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Ventilation. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in covered non-metallic containers as far as possible. Wash away remainder with plenty of water.

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
CLEAR SLIGHTLY YELLOW SOLUTION WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

Physical dangers

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on heating and on contact with acids. Decomposes under the influence of light. This produces toxic and corrosive gases including chlorine (see ICSC 0126). The substance is a strong oxidant. It reacts with combustible and reducing materials. The solution in water is a weak base. Attacks many metals.

Formula: NaClO
Molecular mass: 74.4
Relative density (water = 1): 1.1 (5.5% aqueous solution)
Melting point: -5°C

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes, skin, respiratory tract and digestive tract. See Notes.

Inhalation risk
No indication can be given about the rate at which a harmful concentration of this substance in the air is reached on evaporation at 20°C.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS

ENVIRONMENT
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. This substance does enter the environment under normal use. Great care, however, should be taken to avoid any additional release, for example through inappropriate disposal.

NOTES
Household bleaches usually contain about 5% sodium hypochlorite (about pH11, irritant), and more concentrated bleaches contain 10-15% sodium hypochlorite (about pH13, corrosive).
Rinse contaminated clothing with plenty of water because of fire hazard.
Also consult ICSC #1119 (Sodium hypochlorite, active chlorine >10%).
